Interdisciplinary Studies and the Department of English present a Maymester in London. Global Studies in London is a summer abroad program set in the heart of London, with excursions to Oxford and various locations in the English Countryside.
Callout Dates: Wednesday, September 28, 6:30-7:30pm; Thursday, October 20, 6:00-7:00pm; BRNG 1284
Who can apply? Enrolled Purdue students in any discipline. The program is open to undergraduate and graduate students. Mimimum GPA 2.00, and sophomore standing required by the start of the program. Non-honors students may also take the course for honors credit.
What does the course entail? It begins with a week of classwork at Purdue that focuses on the importance of England in the development of modern international cultural relations. Students engage in an in-depth study of contemporary British literature, culture, history, and politics, and become familiar with the cultural, ethnic, environmental and historical aspects of England and London.
The two courses continue on location with three weeks in London and surrounding areas of Oxford, Canterbury, Stonehenge, Averbury, and elsewhere. New site visits are added each year. Students will experience the settings of literary texts and visit world-renowned museums like the British Museum (and see works such as the Rosetta Stone, the Greek Parthenon Sculptures, and Egyptian Mummies); the National Gallery of Art (and see works by Da Vinci, Monet, Rembrandt, Picasso, and more); the Museum of London (and experience what London was like during the Roman, Medieval, Renaissance, and Victorian eras); and more. Time in London will also be available for general sightseeing, so that students can experience Shakespeare's Globe Theater, Westminster Abbey, the London Eye, the Harry Potter Experience, the Sherlock Holmes Museum, etc. Students will have a free weekend during which they can travel outside of London and/or set their own itineraries. In the past students have visited Ireland, Scotland, France, and Italy.
What does the course credit count for? The two courses can fulfill up to two of the three major Purdue requirements: "Other Cultures," Interdisciplinary Studies, and the Global Studies Minor. The program can be taken for 3 or 6 credits. All students are enrolled in ENGL 396/596. IDIS 490 is optional. Graduate students are automatically enrolled for 6 credits. Financial Aid is available in addition to the $1,000 Study Abroad grant.
